Daily Deviation

Given 2010-05-15
Minus The Rubber Duckie by =FreakyLaurent

I recently spent time with my elderly, ailing grandparents. Every morning and evening, carers come to give my grandfather a shower and assist with what needs doing. We all joked that his girlfriends were coming to see him. Given the here understated seriousness of their respective conditions, it was and is a harrowing time for all involved.

The selection of this piece as a Daily Deviation may rub some of you the wrong way, and I'm aware of that. I understand that it isn't the best photograph that's ever been taken, and, indeed, that gave me pause in the decision. However, in the end, I did not select this piece for its technical quality, but for its humanity and endearing subject. I know it will speak to many of you out there as it did me.

It highlights a small group of people in this world that do the work of angels, and they deserve all the thanks, recognition, and support that we can give them. So, to carers, everywhere, I thank you most sincerely.

Suggester's comment: "You might consider those people with tattoo and hardrock style as stone heart people, but seeing this moment will crash into your heart and change your mind. I am sure you all will love this photo and think about it." ( Suggested by Farbod21889 and Featured by OpalMist )
I think this is one of a chosen few DD's that are so very deserving. My grandpa died this year and it hit me hard.
I only have one surviving grandparent left and I am 34.
The look on your grandads face says a thousand words. Love,Pride,Joy,just to name a few. They are the ones who lived through the great depression, world wars, they have so much to give and we so much to learn. I applaud you for the love and tenderness this picture shows. These are the pictures that you have to remember every part of that day by. Much love and light to you and your family.
If you have time keep me posted on how he is doing.
Tell him I sent him a kiss on the forhead and I have on red lipstick.

I live in Ky and Hospice Caregivers were incredible in our hour of need. I also applaud all caregivers for their work and loving dedication.

What do you think?

my uncle is currently stuck to the bed. sponge baths are the only way to help him now. he cant get up outta bed. so this pic is very moving. gramps can still do things, some others cant anymore since they close to letting go.

may you have a great many days more with your family.

That is a powerful image with a powerful story.

But I feel like an intruder when I look at it. Like I'm stealing some of the intimacy that belongs to other people...

This is one of the most beautiful photographs I have seen.... you need to hush child and appreciate art that captures the subtleties of the human condition.

As I told my daughter the day she said slugs were ugly, They don't think you are all that hot to look at either!

One time i saw this photo I didn't feel anything. I even feel confused! Then I scrolled down and realised my mistake... I judged the picture without caress, without heart, without anything this picture has shown to me. Thanks for awakening me. I just want to stop shouting Grandpa.

That's a very nice capture of this moment, it's really touching. Maybe it touches me more for it reminds me of my father as he was in the final weeks of his life shortened by a cancer, he was still young, only 51, and yet looked so old all of a sudden. Though I miss him I don't see this as bad memories, there was pain of course but must of all there was love and that's what I see :)
Thank you very much for sharing this moment of life and congrats on the DD

some kids today don't appreciate their elders, I personally love this piece because I took care of my step-grandfather in this way in his final days, and I plan to do the same for my parents when they're like that ^^ I like your son for taking care of your father, that's so sweet  you must be proud >w<

Strength and fragility, and proper love.

That is with a doubt the most emotional image I have come across on this site. Truly beautiful.
MaybeSomedayx Featured By Owner Jun 16, 2010
This is one of the best pictures on DeviantART I have ever seen. It's like an emotional trip really, of memories. My grandpa is paralyzed from the waist down, since about 2006, and his senior health care nurses come to visit him and they do these things with him. It's hard, with my grandma being there watching someone else take care of him. She feels that she should do everything because she's his wife and all. However, I really like the way this made me think. I really needed to see this picture today because my grandpa has had a recent bout with pneumonia and it doesn't look so good. This reminded me that family is the most important, and may be the only sacred thing a person can have while they're here on Earth, and I applaud you, for taking the picture, and the time with your family. I would fave this a hundred times over if I could.

I really think its well captured :D I love the expression on grandpa's face:) One thing that i do not like that much though is that towel on the left. It is a disruption to me. Maybe crop the picture a little bit so the towel is not in the picture anymore?
But once again: well done :D

An excellent choice for a DD and a beautiful subject. I have been a neighbour and carer for both the ill and the elderly, and the heart it takes to keep smiling in the face of ceaseless deterioration full time is something I hugely admire.
